2026 brings an exciting and long planned breeding event for us. Two years ago we purchased a male puppy we named Finn from colleagues at Classic Setters in Missouri. Finn comes from a sire and dam well known to us from hunts in the grouse woods and on the prairies of the western Great Lakes and Great Plains states. Genetically, his pedigree compliments bloodlines we already were working with without unduly close line breeding. He will be bred to Sugar Creek Roxanne, a dog of our own breeding. This will be Roxanne's second litter, the first giving us great confidence in her as a producer of healthy capable bird dogs. We already have some deposits on this litter in hand. Scroll down to learn a little more about Roxanne and Finn.
Sugar Creek Roxanne, whelped March 16, 2021, FDSB registration #1663830

Sugar Creek Roxanne is our pick from a March 2021 litter from Chica, our October/Pinecoble cross, and Classic Ruffed Grouse, another dog from from Classic Setters long history of excellent bird dogs. Like her littermates Roxanne has a little lighter build but has demonstrated great stamina, a very cooperative temperament and excellent pointing instincts and prey drive. In the field, Roxanne is a dog that always works comfortably with us, demonstrating moderate range and easy recall. It's easy to keep track of her, even in the densest grouse and woodcock covers. She adjusts amazing well to the type of cover and gamebird present. In short grass prairie and sagebrush, she reaches out in her search but somehow is immediately right back underfoot when we stop to tie a boot lace or take a rest. (Watch for an upcoming post on the subject of range here and at rymansetters.com). Backing and retrieving have come naturally without formal training efforts on our part. Her OFA evaluations for
hips and elbows are "Excellent" and "Normal" respectively. You can see those results posted at the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals website at this OFA link. She weighs about 57 lbs.
Classic Sugar Creek Hrafn, whelped February 15, 2024, UKC/FDSB registration #1715940

In 2024, we were fortunate to have pick of the males from a litter sired by Hafrafells Mori, an Icelandic import, and Classic Fiona's Blue Beebe. Mori comes from a European breeding tradition emphasizing standards for drive, pointing instinct, temperament, health and physical type that are complimentary to the Ryman type setter. Bebee is a dam we watched in the field since puppyhood. We called our puppy Finn (Hrafn is the Icelandic word for raven). With Finn, we got a dog that finished his puppy season like he was a heavily campaigned two year old, an experience proven common with many of his littermates and half siblings through Mori. On his dam's side, we are line breeding to a particularly successful October Setters breeding, as well as lines to one of our earliest dogs. By his 10th month, Finn pointed 8 species of upland game birds in the wild after minimal formal training. Finn backs on sight with intense points
, shows plenty of natural retrieving instinct works at a range modest for the cover and is genuinely fun to hunt. He is OFA "Good" and "Normal" with respect to hips and elbows respectively (OFA link here), and weighs 67 lbs.
